'King Of Boys' 2 Episode 2 Review: The Plot Thickens In This Engrossing Tale

'King Of Boys' 2 Episode 2 Review: The Plot Thickens In This

The second chapter of Kemi Adetiba's engrossing drama sees Sola Sobowale's Eniola Salami attempt to forge some alliances ahead of the gubernatorial election.

From the first frame of the second episode, the viewer's interest is aroused with the introduction of an influential figure in the city of Lagos; the preacher known as Pastor Ifeanyi (played by Richard Mofe-Damijo).

Knowing that she would need his support to emerge victorious in the forthcoming election, Salami meets with the man of God to try to sway him to her cause.

Though charming and charismatic, Pastor Ifeanyi proves to be a hard nut to crack and despite accepting a generous donation from her, remains unyielding in his stance on political neutrality.

Meanwhile, an ambitious journalist is creating a story centered on the return of Salami, tying it to the president in what may be a shocker to readers. It's a must-read that could destroy the protagonist once and for all.

Aware of Salami's moves and wanting to beat her at her own game, the cunning and calculating wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Randle (Nse Ikpe-Etim) requests for a meeting with the clergyman Pastor Ifeanyi. As expected, he refuses to endorse her husband for re-election.

Unlike Eniola Salami, Mrs. Randle has already set things in motion and Pastor Ifeanyi finds himself in a situation whereby he appears to be endorsing the present state governor.

Director Kemi Adetiba's brilliance is evident in the way the second episode of this limited series unfolds. Every scene, every move, and every actor has a role to play, whether they know it or not. They are the different parts of a big machine that will shape a turning point in the life of Eniola Salami.

As the heroine, Salami is a puzzle that always manages to surprise the viewer. Her constant inner battle with her evil self (Toni Tones giving an impressive performance as the younger, more malicious version of the character) makes her want to do what she thinks is right.

The protagonist can't be outrightly said to be bad or good; she walks the grey area, treading in and out of both extremes, making her a complex and well-fleshed character, one who is continuously defined by her surroundings and choices.

Episode two ends on an even better note than its predecessor and I can't wait to watch the third. It's been an exciting ride and I hope the suspense and drama is maintained till the end of the series.

Episode Rating: 8/10.
