The penultimate episode of King of Boys: The Return of the KIng is packed with action, drama, suspense, and an impressive cliffhanger, whetting the appetite of the viewer for an explosive finale.
For the first time since her return to the country, Eniola Salami addresses the men at the table and a compromise is reached; they are to make sure she wins the gubernatorial election while she relinquishes her position as 'King' to Odudubariba.
Just after the election debate, Salami's convoy is attacked and some of her men are killed in the ensuing gunfight. Afterwards, she learns of a shocking betrayal (which seems to me like something that was staged) and after a major conflict with her devilish younger self, ends the life of the one responsible.
Salami then pays Aare a visit in confinement and the two have a really interesting banter as they attempt to one-up each other in a game of power display and intimidation.
The episode ends with the vengeful Makanaki reuniting with his 'pal' Odogwu Malay, leaving the viewer guessing what will follow in the last chapter.
After waiting for the moves from some of the key players to be made since the protagonist's return, I must say that I was impressed with director Kemi Adetiba after seeing them play out in this chapter.
The mix of Yoruba and Igbo in the dialogue and the never-ending proverbs that go with the former native tongue adds a rich flavour to the words being spoken.
A lot of work went into the gunfight scene and though it could have been better, it was convincing enough to look real. The effect used in the car explosion is undoubtedly the best part of the scene as it is almost flawless.
It's been a remarkable ride with King of Boys: The Return of the King; Sola Sobowale, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Reminisce, and of course the talented Kemi Adetiba all make this limited series worth it.
Episode Rating: 8/10.
