The government of Kogi State on Thursday approved and unveiled new textbooks for nursery, primary and secondary schools.
The state's Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Wemi Jones, during the unveiling ceremony, said the textbooks would now be used in place of the ones used by the students in the last five years.
Jones stated that the book review happened every five years and the new books would be used in all private and public schools in the state for the next five years.
He added that the book review was a scheme to make sure the state curriculum was up to date with international standards.
He further appreciated Governor Yahaya Bello for prioritising education in the state, and the commission for the success of the exercise.
Jones said that Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which was one of the educational techniques of the state government, was wholly considered during the review.
”When we find books that are worthy, we will also add them.
“That is why we have a fully equipped and staffed quality assurance department with experts and technocrats handling the job,” he said.
The commissioner, however, noted that the approval of the books would not deter the ministry from accommodating news books within the five years.
He also revealed that the governor had approved the employment of more teachers which would soon be completed.
The Director of the Quality Assurance Department in the ministry, Pius Ikwuje, stated the department was inaugurated on Feb. 7, 2022, for the review of the books.
According to the Director, publishers, authors, and writers were invited to submit their books, while experts and qualified teachers at all levels within and outside the state were tasked with reviewing the submitted books.
