Kogi To Reintroduce Religious Studies, History In Secondary

Yahaya Bello

The Kogi State Government has disclosed that Religious Studies and History will be included in the State School Curriculum from the 2022/2023 Academic Calendar.

The Executive Chairman, Kogi State Science, Technical Education and Teaching Service Commission (STETSCOM), Cecilia Cook made closure at the just concluded 2022 Mandatory Continuing Professional Training Programme of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools ( ANCOPSS), North Central Zone held in Lokoja.

Cook noted that Religious Studies Teachers, as well as History, are to be employed in the ongoing recruitment of secondary school teachers.

According to her, the history of Nigeria might go into extinction as most young Nigerians currently know less or nothing about the background of the country, hence the reintroduction to the Kogi Secondary School system.

“History tells us where we have common origin like Ile-Ife and Benin. These bring about ties which can lead to peace, unity and oneness.”

Cook explained that Religious Studies that teach about moral values and godly conduct are no longer compulsory subjects in schools, saying vices such as internet fraud and other immoral acts are a result of a lack of religious teachings.

“Religious subjects like CRK and Islamic Studies are not supposed to be optional but compulsory in all schools as being done in those days.

"These subjects teach our children to behave in a godly manner. Today the fear of God is no longer there.

"People cannot move freely, kidnapping, corruption and social vices have taken over the country because of no fear God any longer.”

The STETSCOM Boss said the reintroduction of the subjects is part of the reforms the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello has brought to the State Education Sector.

She expressed optimism that the effort being made by the Government in the State education sector will become an envy of other states including the Federal Government.
