Kwara: Vigilantes clash with bandits, one killed, others app

Vigilantes killed one bandit and arrested two others when the terrorists attacked Maloko and Sulu, two sleepy villages in Omupo District of Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Allnews.ng gathered that three persons were abducted during the incident, including two ladies, but one male escaped. Hunters and vigilantes followed their trail, rescuing the two females and apprehending the alleged bandits.

According to unsubstantiated accounts, one of the bandits was killed after a shootout.

Efforts to contact the Kwara State Police command's spokesperson, Ejire Adeyemi Toun, to verify the attack have been unsuccessful.

In a related report, a suspected bandit was killed in Niger State's Borgu Local Government Area as he was trying to collect a N3 million ransom, according to the Niger State Police Command.

Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger State police spokesperson, released a statement on Thursday stating that the event happened after some bandits threatened to kidnap a businessman in the Bako-Mission area.

According to Abiodun, the businessman was ordered by the bandits to deposit N3 million at a certain spot in Tunga-Umoru village.

In response, he added, police officers and vigilantes under the direction of the DPO of the New-Bussa Division mobilised to the scene.

They successfully rescued a 22-year-old female victim who had been kidnapped earlier after engaging the bandits in a gunfight.

One of the bandits was neutralised during the firefight, and an empty magazine from his AK-47 weapon was found.

“Immediately after this information was received, the police tactical team, including vigilante members led by the DPO New-Bussa Div swung into action, mobilised to the purported location, adopted an appropriate operational strategy and engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, while one female victim of about 22 years earlier kidnapped was rescued unhurt.

“Fortunately, the team combed the bush and one of the bandits was neutralised during the gun battle and his AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine was recovered,” the statement partly read.

He also disclosed that there are still efforts underway to capture the other bandits who were wounded by gunshots but were able to flee.
