Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 victory at Girona on Monday, thanks to a last-minute goal from Alvaro Morata, strengthening their hold on third place in LaLiga.

After Real Sociedad drew at Mallorca, Atletico moved three points clear of the Basque side with their hard-fought win.

Morata's goal came from a close-range finish after a corner was flicked on by Angel Correa, with Atletico surviving a VAR check to see if the striker had strayed offside.

Girona started brightly, but Atletico controlled the game in the first half, with Memphis Depay and Antoine Griezmann combining well.

Atletico appealed for a penalty when Oriol Romeu handled it, but the referee spotted a foul committed by Atletico's Mario Hermoso.

Jan Oblak was called into action to deny Girona's Viktor Tsygankov and David Lopez.

With the game looking to end in a draw, Morata's goal snatched all three points for Atletico.

Girona defender Santi Bueno lamented the loss, saying that it was a shame as they had made a huge effort and a result had escaped them by a fine margin.
