Atletico Madrid cruised to a 6-1 victory against Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday, which helped them climb to third in the league table.

The match also saw Diego Simeone set a new milestone as a coach, as he overtook the late Luis Aragones as the coach in charge of Atletico for the most games, with this his 613th at the helm of the team.

The match was a complete rout, with Memphis Depay scoring twice, and Antoine Griezmann, Yannick Carrasco and Alvaro Morata all adding to the lead. The victory affirmed Atletico's vast improvement in 2023, and they have now found their groove after misfiring earlier in the season.

While Simeone's team suffered a group stage exit in Europe and have not been in the title race, they have established themselves as a team capable of battling with giants Real Madrid and Barcelona for domestic honours, as well as two Europa Leagues.

The win left Sevilla 16th in the league table, and they could be sucked into the relegation zone on Sunday. Meanwhile, Griezmann celebrated his goal with Simeone on the touchline and said he had hoped for a performance of this calibre.

Simeone handed Depay his first start since his January switch from Barcelona, and the Dutchman should have fired Atletico ahead early on. Next time, though, he made no mistake, with Griezmann threading a pass through for the forward, who slotted between Bounou's legs to open the scoring after 23 minutes. Depay hit his second three minutes later, driving a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to double Atletico's lead. Sevilla pulled one back before halftime, with Pape Gueye crossing for Youssef En-Nesyri, who finished clinically from close range.
