Lagos: Alaba Market Engulfed In Flames, Firefighters Stopped

Fire has engulfed the shops in the popular Alaba International Market in the Ojo Local Government area of Lagos State.

PM News reports that the incident on Friday took a rather unexpected turn when firefighters were prevented from performing their duty by an angry mob.

The blaze reportedly started in a shop where gas cylinders were stored before spreading to other parts.

The firefighters who were turned back came from Ojo, Sari-Iganmu, and Ajegunle and as of the time of filing this report, no explanation was provided for the action by the people.

Speaking on the fire, the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, disclosed that the agency was working with security operatives to address it.

“Report reaching Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service indicates shops at the popular Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos are on Fire.

“However, Fire Crew from Ojo, Sari-Iganmu, and Ajegunle are being turned back by angry mobs from performing their statutory duty but fire fighting trucks are presently on standby.

“The agency is consequently collaborating with Security Agents to address it”, she said.
