Lagos: Fleeing BBL doctor arrested by police over lady’s death

Lagos: Fleeing BBL doctor arrested by police over lady’s d

Idara Bassey, a Lagos physician who is wanted about the death of Abiola, a 36-year-old patient, following a buttock augmentation procedure at a Lekki Phase 1 clinic, is currently being held by the police.

Abiola had gone to the clinic to get her buttocks enlarged, a surgery that proved fatal.

BBL is a well-liked augmentation procedure that eliminates extra fat from other body parts while shaping the buttocks.

The State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti is presently looking into Bassey. Her detention was verified by Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the state police.

On August 26, 2024, Abiola passed away in her clinic following a buttock augmentation treatment. At that time, Bassey had already fled.

Recall the deceased’s driver reported the incident at the Maroko Police Division.

“Upon their arrival, the clinic owner directed a nurse to administer the injection to Abiola. Moments later, chaos ensued as the woman lost consciousness and started gasping for breath.

“Desperate for help, the driver rushed Abiola to another hospital in Lekki Phase 1 but she was confirmed dead by the staff on duty upon arrival.

“Detectives from the command had visited the scene, gathered evidence, inspected and photographed the woman’s remains, and subsequently transported the corpse to a morgue for autopsy.” The Police had said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command had initially arrested a nurse in connection with the death of Abiola.

The arrest was confirmed by SP Benjamin Hundeyin on Wednesday.

Hundeyin reported that the nurse was taken into custody following a complaint received by the Maroko Police Division on Tuesday at around 11:40 a.m.

The complaint was filed by the deceased’s driver, who stated that early Monday morning at approximately 3:00 a.m., he was asked to transport Abiola from her residence at Diamond Estate, Sangotedo-Lekki, to a clinic in Lekki Phase 1 for a BBL injection.

Upon arrival, the clinic's owner instructed the nurse to administer the injection. According to the police, Abiola subsequently lost consciousness and began gasping for breath.

“The victim was rescued and rushed to another hospital in Lekki Phase 1 for treatment, where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. Based on the report, the scene was visited by a team of detectives.

“The hospital was also visited, where the corpse was inspected and photographed before it was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy,” he said.

Hundeyin said that the said nurse had been arrested and an investigation was in progress.
