Michael Omisande, the Chairman Lagos State Chapter of the Association of Retirees and Pensioners, has declared that the state authority is indebted to retirees who retired between 2018 and 2021 by over N30 billion.
He revealed this at a press briefing on Thursday, expressing the pains of retirees in Lagos State.
He continued by saying that some of the affected retirees have died, some afflicted with ailments, while some were evicted from their apartments due to the inability to pay rent.
“We wrote to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and all stakeholders but the governor kept mute. Recently, we wrote a petition to the governor but there was no response.
“We are aware that Lagos is the richest state in Nigeria. If governors in states like Borno can pay all their outstanding pensions, why can’t Lagos pay and address the issue of death of retirees," he said.
He, therefore, pleaded with the government to urgently pay all outstanding pensions, which have accumulated for the past three to four years.
