Lagos Monarch Jailed For Faking Kidnap

Mutiu Ogundare, the dethroned Baale of Shangisha in the Magodo area of Lagos State has been given a 15-year jail term for faking his kidnap.

The sentence was given by Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Tuesday after the convict was first remanded on July 16, 2017, by an Ogba magistrate’s court, Ikeja, for faking his kidnap.

Mutiu stood trial with his wife Abolanle and brother Opeyemi Mohammed and they were all arraigned on three counts bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace and fake kidnapping.

Abolanle had been discharged and acquitted by the court on June 15 after it was deemed that she no link to the offences.

Mohammed was also given a 15-year prison sentence for the same offence.

While delivering his judgment, Justice Oshodi stated: “I have considered the allocutus of the defence counsel. However, it is in the view of this court that the defendants showed no remorse during the trial.

“In fact, the first defendant tried to buy his way out of the court. A lesson has to be taught to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The defendants are hereby sentenced to 10 years on count one without an option of fine; one year on count two with an option of N200,000 fine, and 15 years on count three without an option of fine.

“The sentences shall run concurrently from the day they were arrested.”
