Comedian Lasisi Elenu has raised concerns over the usefulness of the National Identification Number (NIN) in Nigeria.
In a tweet posted on his handle, Lasisi questioned the relevance of the NIN, and why it is always the first thing banks ask for when customers want to carry out transactions.
He further expressed his frustration over the silence of authorities on the use of NIN in combating crimes like kidnapping, which has become rampant in recent times.
According to Lasisi, if the NIN was as useful as it is claimed to be, it would have been used to track and apprehend kidnappers.
Lasisi also questioned the essence of obtaining a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) with fingerprint biometrics when the voting process can still be manually altered, despite the use of electronic card readers.
“I have asked this before. What’s the use of NIN?
"Why is it the first thing they ask you in banks yet when kidnappers are committing crimes NIN use is suddenly quiet?
“Why get PVC, with finger prints when the voting process can still be manually altered.
"Why must Naija stress you,” he tweeted.
