The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Chapter, has said that the strike action that took place in the state over the implementation of the new minimum wage had nothing to do with the union.
In a statement, the zonal coordinator of the union, Olusiji Sowande, said that the protesters were impersonators and were “unknown to any structure of our union.”
He said that the strike action which took place at the Lagos State University (LASU) was laughable, as the union was already on an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to execute the agreement that both parties came to in 2009.
Sowande said, “It is no longer news that our union has been on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike occasioned by the Federal Government’s failure to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement the 2019 Memorandum of Action, as well as forceful migration of our members in public federal universities to the highly problematic and illegal Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

“It is therefore amusing that a group parading themselves as ASUU-LASU executive under the leadership of one Dr. Ibrahim Bakare, declared a local strike in the name of our Union, ASUU, on matters related to wages.
“The general public should please note that they are a bunch of impostors using the good name of ASUU to achieve their opportunistic goals and possibly gain legitimacy with the Lagos State Government."
