Uganda Shuts Down All Social Media Platforms Ahead Of Election

Following the upcoming presidential election in Uganda, the East African country has ordered internet service providers to block all social media platforms and messaging apps until further notice.

The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Irene Sewankambo in a letter on Tuesday ordered telecommunications companies to 'immediately suspend any access and use' of social media and online messaging platforms in the country. Read more here.

Uganda Election: Bobi Wine’s Private Guards Withdraw Services

Ugandan Presidential Candidate under the platform of National Unity Platform (NUP) Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert, better known as Bobi Wine on Wednesday said the private security company that has been guarding his home for the past 12 years has withdrawn its services.

Wine who made this known via its official Twitter handle said the guards stationed at his house were disarmed by their supervisors who said they were acting based on instructions. Read more here.

Uganda Denies U.S. Access To Observe Presidential Election

The United States on Wednesday said Uganda's Presidential Election vote would lack accountability and transparency because most of its accreditation requests were denied, therefore, it can't observe the election.

The US ambassador to Uganda. Natalie Brown in a statement expressed “profound disappointment” saying more than 75% of the observer accreditations requested had been denied. Read more here.

Uganda Election: UN Calls For Peaceful Polls

The Secretary-General to the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres has implored all political actors and their supporters in the Ugandan election to “refrain from the use of hate speech, intimidation and violence”. 

Guterres made this known in a statement while expressing concern over reports of violence and tensions in parts of the country on Thursday, January 14, 2020.  Read more here.
