Lebanon Legalises Marijuana For Medical Purposes

In the face of a battle against the coronavirus pandemic and an ongoing protest in Lebanon, the Lebanese parliament met to vote on the legalisation of the growing of marijuana for medical use.

The lawmakers gathered in a hall that seats a thousand to ensure that the practice of social distancing is observed, with anti-government protesters gathered outside the hall in a convoy.

Lebanon has a record of 677 coronavirus cases and a death toll of 21, leading the government to re-appropriate the $40 million loan acquired from World Bank to the fight against coronavirus.

Protests have been ongoing in the country before the coronavirus pandemic caused the country to issue a lockdown order.

The protesters moved in a noisy convoy of cars, honking and wielding the flag while wearing face masks.

“Today, instead of passing a general amnesty law… they could pass a law on the independence of the judiciary,” a protester said.

Adding, “We want to recover the stolen money,” in reference to the allegation that the Lebanese political elites have diverted funds outside Lebanon while the average Lebanese national is blocked from withdrawing their savings at the bank.
