An appeal has been made for quality education and proper care for the girl child.

The call was made by a lega luminary, Justice Grace Onibokun while addressing participants at a day workshop with the theme “Girls Education: A Necessary Paradigm Shift", in Ilesa.

The workshop was organised by the Tirimi of Iperindo, Oba Adedeji Ogunleye to sensitise the community on dangers inherent in the neglect of the girl child.

Justice Onibokun decried discrimination of all sorts against the girl child in favour of their male counterparts by the parents who see the female gender as weaker vessel of less value.

Speaking on the importance of formal education to the social, economic and psychological growth of the female child, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Justice, Barrister Adekemi Bello urged the participants drawn from both private and public secondary schools to give credence to education and shun immorality for outstanding academic performance and secure a brighter future for themselves.

Barrister Bello blamed the increasing moral decadence on exposure of the underage students, especially, the females to pornography in the guise of reality shows on cable television.

He urged those who indulged in the immoral act to desist in order not to jeopardize their chance to attain greatness through education.

Also speaking, Engr. E.A. Oyebode condemned negative attitude of some parents who forced their female children into early marriage, because they see sending them to school as waste of time and money due to the erroneous belief that they would eventually end up bearing another person’s name .

Oyebode canvassed for conducive learning environment for girl child describing the infrastructure in the public schools at Iperindo as an eyesore which needed government’s urgent intervention.

Founder of a Non-Government Organisation, Eni Ayeni admonished the students not to be thrilled by worldly things that are ephemeral, but rather wait patiently for a ripe time to enjoy life to the fullest.

Earlier, the organiser of the programme, the Tirimi of Iperindo, Oba Adedeji Ogunleye hinged his resolve to organise the workshop on the rising cases of child marriage in the town and the need to give girl child a proper upbringing.

Oba Ogunleye challenged the parents to live up to their responsibility and give the children a better future.
