Let's Protect Our Environment To Promote Our Health — NYSC

Environmental sanitation has been advocated as a means to protect the earth's natural resources which include ground and surface waters.

In order to carry through with protecting the environment, open defecation and indiscriminate urination have been frowned upon.

This was the assertion of Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during activities held to mark the 2022 NYSC National Environmental Sanitation Day.

Represented by Winifred Shokpeka during the flag off in Olorunda local government area of Osun State, the Osun State NYSC Coordinator stated that sanitation protects human health and extends life span.

In her address, the Osun State NYSC Coordinator, Winifred Shokpeka added that keeping a clean environment also grows the economy since it is healthy individuals that it takes to run it.

Shokpeka advised against the use of rugs in households and urged for the adoption of tiles as improper use of rugs could lead to respiratory tract infections.

While maintaining that sanitation is essential for children's survival and development, she added that a cleaner environment promotes healthy children devoid of diseases.

"Cleanliness affects your way of thinking. Sanitation is a necessity in the life of every individual and not just collectively as we are about to do.

"It is important for you to see how much change could happen once you go out there to show everyone that you are worthy ambassadors of the NYSC Scheme."

She urged the corps members not to see the exercise as just another activity, but rather, to become advocates for healthy living and clean environments in their places of primary assignment and communities.

“We are not just cleaning the streets, we are also cleaning our minds. A clean environment is a key factor to staying safe," she concluded.
