At about 6:00 PM on Friday, May 21, 2021, the 25th Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru died in a plane crash in Kaduna.

A military Beachcraft 350 carrying him went down at the Kaduna International Airport on Friday evening, claiming the life of top military officials and other passengers.

Ibrahim Attahiru was born on August 10, 1966. He hailed from Doka in Kaduna State.

He was a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and Nigerian Army School of Infantry.

Attahiru commenced cadets training in January 1984 and was commissioned into the rank of Second Lieutenant in December 1986 as an Infantry Officer.

He holds a Masters degree in Strategic Management and Policy Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Others qualifications he held include, Masters of Science in Human Resources Management and Development form Salford University in the United Kingdom and Graduate Diploma in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Attahiru was among the Service Chiefs appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021.

Others included General Leo Irabor – Chief of Defence Staff; Vice Admiral A. Z. Gambo – Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Marshal I. O. Amao – Chief of Air Staff.

Ibrahim Attahiru on his appointment vowed that the Nigerian Army will deal decisively with every form of security threats confronting the country.

He said "The Nigerian Army under my leadership would remain proactive and jointly work with other security agencies to decisively deal with threats facing the nation.

“The Nigerian Army under my watch remains resolute and is poised more than ever before to decisively deal with individuals or groups that threaten the peace, security and stability of our great nation,”

But sadly, the news of Attahiru's death barely five months after his new appointment did not make him fulfil his vows.

Ibrahim Attahiru's Military Career

He was General Officer Commanding 82 Division of Nigerian Army, Enugu prior to his appointment as Chief of Army Staff.

In 2017, he was ordered by the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai to destroy Boko Haram and capture Abubakar Shekau, its leader dead or alive. 

Meanwhile, barely 48 hours to the death of Ibrahim Attahiru, Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau reportedly blew himself up in what has been fingered as a suicide.

However, Nigeria’s military is investigating reports that the leader of the armed group Boko Haram may have been killed or seriously injured following clashes with a rival group.

Marital Life

Ibrahim Attahiru is happily married and blessed with children.

Awards And Recommendations

The General has several honours and awards to his credit. He is a highly decorated officer with UNAMSIL Medal, ECOMOG Medal, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguish Service Star, Grand Service Star, Corp Medal of Honour, Command medal, Field Command Medal, and Field Command Medal of Honour.
