LIFE: Meet Farouk Yahaya, The 26th Chief Of Army Staff With

Update 1: (Corrected order from 22nd to 26th) On May 27, 2021, Major General Farouk Yahaya was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the 26th new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Yahaya replaced Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in the 2021 NAF Beechcraft King Air 350 plane crash near Kaduna International Airport, on Friday, May 21, 2021.

Who is Farouk Yahaya 

Major General Farouk Yahaya Chief Of Army Staff, Nigeria, Life, biography, career, education and personal life

Major-General Farouk Yahaya was born on January 5, 1966, in Sifawa, Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State. He served as the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Nigerian Army before he handed over power to Major General Usman Mohammed in April 2020.

The new Chief of Army Staff was the Garrison Commander Headquarters Guards Brigade, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Deputy Director Army Headquarters Department of Military Secretary,  Deputy Director Army Research and Development, and the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield.

Farouk also served as the Principal General Staff Officer (PGSO) to the Honourable Minister of Defence, the Commander, Headquarters 4 Brigade, and 29 Task Force Brigade (Operation Zaman Lafiya). He was also Director Manpower at the Army Headquarters, Military Secretary, Army Headquarters, and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division of the Nigerian Army. 

In 2019, Yahaya lead Operation CLEAN SWEEP on the clearance operation to flush out bandits from Kuduru forest, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.

Until his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff, Yahaya was the Theatre Commander Operation HADIN KAI, responsible for Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency operations in North-East Nigeria.

Educational Background

Major General Farouk Yahaya attended the Nigerian Defence Academy and the University of Salford, Manchester, England.

He holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in History and a Masters Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy.
