Liverpool's Defence Laid Bare By Everton In Meyerside Derby

Liverpool faced local city rival, Everton in the second EPL fixture as Carlo Ancelotti's men exploited Jurgen Klopp's side defensive weakness in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield.

The Reds lost their main man, Van Virgil Dijk to Everton in the first face-off Meyerside derby back in October 2020 with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

This time around it was a cruise for Everton as Liverpool was a shadow of their former selves, early on Richarlison opened up the scoring with a wonderful finish after getting on the pass from James Rodriguez.

The VAR checked for several minutes before ruling him onside and a goal!

Liverpool tried so hard to get back into the game with numerous chances going to waste and Everton goalkeeper, Pickford saving most.

It was another huge slump for Liverpool as the chances for European football going up in flames -- they might not even get a Europa League spot.

The match was not far from salvageable with Liverpool all up the pitch looking to grab an equalizer but then got caught in a counter-attack, Richarlison again on the charge, dropped it for the substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin, took a first-time shot but Alisson parried it.

He tried to reach for a rebound but Alexandre Arnold's leg tripped him in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

VAR checked, the referee went to the monitor to check and stood by his decision for a penalty.

Sirguddson stood up for the penalty, picked a spot and shoots, Alisson guessed right but was too fast for him to catch.

This victory is the first Meyerside derby Everton will get since 1999.

Everton are levelled with Liverpool on 40 points with a game in hand, which means they could go ahead of West Ham and level with Chelsea at 43 points if they win their outstanding game.

The Toffees face Southampton next at Goodison Park while Liverpool will hope to get all three points against struggling Sheffield United.
