Local govt weakness major cause of insecurity situation in Nigeria – Tajudeen Abbas

Local govt weakness major cause of insecurity situation in N

Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has stated that the problem of insecurity in Nigeria today can be linked to the absence or inadequacy of administration at the local government level.

Tajudeen made the statement during a one-day national dialogue on Nigeria's security concerns and good governance at the local level.

The Speaker, who was represented by his deputy, emphasised that tackling insecurity issues is critical for promoting good government and strengthening national security.

He, however, stated that over the years, despite complex and multifaceted obstacles, the government has made courageous and essential efforts to address the key and historical concerns impeding Nigeria's growth.

“While the immediate effects have been distressing for many, I firmly believe that these actions, which have already begun to yield positive results, will soon set Nigeria on a path of recovery, growth, and sustainable development.”

Abbas emphasised that the integration of local governments into the mainstream of Nigerian governance is a critical component of the President's Renewed Hope Agenda and that the federal government recently filed a legal action in the Supreme Court against the governors of the 36 states for alleged misconduct in the administration of Local Government Areas (LGAs).

He stated that the suit, brought by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, seeks full autonomy for all LGAs in compliance with the 1999 Constitution, which requires a democratically elected local government system.

According to him, local problems necessitate quick action at the palace where they occur and are most directly felt.
