Minister Adamu Adamu, the current and longest-serving Minister of Education in Nigeria has stepped aside.
Adamu, who has been the Minister of Education since Nigeria's transition to Democracy in 1999 exited his role o Thursday, May 25, 2023, in Abuja.
There were several "ups and downs" in the education sector during his tenure as education minister.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), among others, embarked on the most industrial strike actions during his administration, but the sector also saw the implementation of new policies and an increase in the number of new institutions, among other things.
Also under his leadership, the greatest number of public and private universities were established.
More than 120 new universities received licenses, and other polytechnics and colleges of education were transformed into universities.
Members of the ministry personnel praised Adamu, who was honoured on Thursday in Abuja during a valedictory event arranged for him.
“I have served 22 ministers during the course of my career but he remains the best and the person who gave me the most freedom to do my best as a director of press,” the ministry’s Director of Press, Ben Goong lauded the outgoing minister.
