Luis Rubiales: Prosecutors Begin Preliminary Probe On Spanis

Prosecutors at Spain's top criminal court have opened a preliminary investigation into Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales following his unsolicited kiss on Jenni Hermoso.

The incident happened during the presentation ceremony at the Women's World Cup final in Sydney on August 20.

This sparked a row across Spain and around the world, with as many as 11 members of women's football staff in the Spanish football federation resigning from their posts over the scandal.

A statement from Spain's highest court said: "Prosecutors from the National Court have opened a preliminary investigation to look into the facts, which could constitute an offence of sexual assault."

It also indicated it would offer Hermoso a chance to file suit within 15 days, adding that the prosecutors had received a complaint of "obscene exhibitionism before a minor" after Rubiales appeared to grab his crotch in the stands next to Spain's Princess Infanta Sofía.

Rubiales, who has come under fire for his behaviour, has already been provisionally suspended by FIFA for a duration of 90 days.

The 46-year-old has however refused to resign over the scandal, insisting the kiss was consensual and that he is targeted by "false feminists."

But Hermoso disputed his statement on Friday, claiming that she never consented to him planting a kiss on her lips.

"I felt vulnerable and a victim of an assault, an impulsive, macho act, out of place and with no type of consent on my part," the 33-year-old said in a powerful statement.

Meanwhile, Rubiales' elderly mum, Angeles Bejar, launched a hunger-strike protest over the “inhumane witch-hunt” against her son.

She is reportedly carrying out her protest in a church at Montril in Southern Spain and has vowed to continue the hunger strike “indefinitely, day and night" until a solution could be found to the “unwarranted, inhumane and bloodthirsty hunt” of her son.
