Lukaku Seals Season-Long Loan Move To Roma

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku has joined Roma from Chelsea on a season-long loan.

The deal will see Chelsea receive a fee worth between £7 million to £8 million depending on performance-related conditions.

There is also a release clause in the Belgian's contract, thought to be in the region of £38 million.

Lukaku is believed to have agreed to a wage cut for the remaining three years of his Chelsea contract to be reunited with head coach Jose Mourinho, who took Roma to the Europa League final last season.

"The welcome that this club and these fans gave me thrilled me and represents a further incentive to give everything for my new team," Lukaku said.

"I had the opportunity to speak with the owners in recent days and I was struck by their ambition. Now we have to work, be humble and grow game after game.

"For my part, I can't wait to make myself available to my teammates, on and off the field."

Lukaku is reported to have turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, amid interests from Juventus and Inter Milan.

He moved back to Chelsea from Inter for £97.5 million in August 2021 on a five-year deal for his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

But his return proved unsuccessful and led to a loan move to Inter last season, where he had limited playing time under coach Simone Inzaghi.

He has scored 15 goals in 59 games for Chelsea in two spells and is 20th on the Premier League all-time goal-scoring list with 121 goals.

He has also previously won the Belgian championship with Anderlecht, an FA Cup and a Club World Cup with Chelsea, and a Scudetto, an Italian Cup and an Italian Super Cup with Inter.
