Maguire, who became the world's most expensive defender following his £80 million ($101 million) transfer from Leicester City in 2019, has slipped down the pecking order behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof.
Luke Shaw has also been deployed in central defence, limiting Maguire to only eight Premier League starts this season.
Ten Hag, in an interview with The Times newspaper, acknowledged that Maguire's future is a decision he must make.
"Let's say I'm happy he's here and when we needed him he did his job. But it's also a decision he has to make."
"No one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well," he added.
