Malaria has been described as one of the major killer diseases in Kano in 2021.
The Chief Medical Director, Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Kano, Dr Mustapha Shu'abu Hikima disclosed this to AllNews on Tuesday, adding that though the disease topped the charts at the teaching hospital, it was mostly the mild case that was recorded.
Residents of Kano have been battling with malaria for a while, with households recording cases amongst most or all members, some more than once.
Speaking further on this, Dr Hikima attributed the cases to refusing to use mosquito nets and an abundance of breeding grounds for the mosquitos. He said the disease was more dangerous to children and the elderly which in some cases leads to death.
Aside from Malaria, other illnesses such as peptic ulcers and others were among the health challenges in the hospital.
Speaking on health care, especially at the hospital, Dr Hikima said some work has been done towards the end of 2021 to better the health care delivery at the hospital, among which are building of a new ward to accommodate the rising number of patients, addition of qualified doctors and surgeons through the post-graduate training program that will cater for the patients without having to refer them to other hospitals.
He added that accreditation at their obstetrics and gynaecology department from the West African College of Surgeons would enable them to train and retrain their staff for 5 years, adding that five of their staff that went for the training passed in flying colours. This he said would enable them to tackle maternal mortality and morbidity at the hospital and Kano state at large.
Dr Mustapha Hikima appreciated the efforts of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for prioritizing health care in the state, as he expressed optimism that 2022 would be better for people of the state and even neighbouring states in accessing quality healthcare.
