Mali's Ruling Junta Says Draft Constitution To Be Voted In June

Mali's junta announced that it would hold a referendum on a new constitution on June 18th.

The referendum was supposed to take place on March 19, but it was postponed indefinitely.

On Friday, government spokesman Aboulaye Maga announced the decision on national television:

"The electoral college is convened on Sunday, June 18, 2023, throughout the national territory and in the Republic of Mali's diplomatic and consular missions to vote on the draft Constitution attached to this decree."

The adoption of a new constitution is crucial, albeit delayed, step toward restoring civilian government in a country grappling with multifaceted crises while fighting jihadism.

The junta justified the referendum postponement by citing the time required to appoint representatives to the election management body and the goal to disseminate the constitutional language, thus legitimizing their rule until the next presidential election.

This Constitution is a critical component of the massive reform initiative invoked by the military to justify their rule until 2024.
