Man City Game Will Not Define Arsenal's Season — Arteta

Man City Game Will Not Define Arsenal's Season — Arteta

Mikel Arteta has said that the crunch game between Arsenal and Manchester City will not define his side's season in the Premier League.

Both teams are billed to trade tackles at the Etihad on Wednesday night in what would be a potential Premier League title decider.

While Arsenal are currently the league leaders with 75 points, the defending champions are in second place with 70 points and have two games in hand.

The current form of both teams shows that City and Arsenal are on long unbeaten runs, albeit they have the upper hand because the Gunners have been wobbling in recent weeks.

Arteta's side failed to register a win in three successive games, surrendering a two-goal lead against Liverpool and West Ham to share the spoils, then salvaging a 3-3 draw against Southampton in the last three minutes having trailed 2-0 and 3-1.

This has led to questions being asked over their nerve in the run-in, with Arteta conceding that his side now have to be perfect in order to stay on top of the table.

The Spaniard coach said: "If we win tomorrow night we haven't won the league, that's for sure.

"It will shift the percentages a little bit, but with five games left after this, it will still be very tricky.

"We wanted to close that gap as much as we could and we're toe-to-toe with them.

"We knew we had to go to the Etihad. Is it going to define the season? The answer is no.

"Mentality plays a huge part. Obviously, the belief is there.

"When I look at how they train and the way they've reacted, the mood in the dressing room and the way they defend each other, we really want it.

"We're going to show that again tomorrow night.

"But we have to deliver in the right moment with the right performance and it has to be perfection because that's what this last level demands - absolute perfection."

Since losing to Tottenham in early February, City are unbeaten in 16 games in all competitions, recording 13 wins and three draws in that run.

In that time, the only team to take a point off them in the league are relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, who claimed a 1-1 draw in February courtesy of Chris Wood's late equaliser.
