Man Sentenced To 20 Years Imprisonment For Raping Nine-Year-Old

The Principal Resident Magistrate court in Lilongwe Malawi has sentenced a 39-year-old man, Kondwani Chitukula to 20 years imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old step-granddaughter in the district.

The victim was defiled multiple times, according to the findings.

Chitukula was detained as a result of this.

Despite Chitukula's assertion of innocence, the court found him guilty after the state presented four witnesses.

The prisoner begged for mercy, claiming that this was his first offence, as a kind of mitigation.

Ntalawe, however, argued that because Chitukula was the victim's parent, he should have been at the forefront of defending the girl's rights and requesting a harsher penalty for the prisoner.

Ntalawe added that the girl had experienced trauma that would follow her throughout the rest of her life because it was her guardian who had sexually assaulted the child.

Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe rejected the mitigating circumstances while agreeing with the state.

Michongwe added that defilement is a serious offence that carries a life sentence as the maximum penalty.

After that, to dissuade future perpetrators, he sentenced Chitukula to 20 years in jail with hard labour.
