Man Utd vs Tottenham: Match Preview, EPL Build-up Team News, Kick-Off Time

Man Utd vs Tottenham: Match Preview, EPL Build-up Team News,

Tottenham travels to Old Trafford to face Manchester United for matchday 4 in the English Premier League (EPL) fixtures as Jose Mourinho faces his old club now headed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

AllNews reports that Manchester United has played fewer games to Tottenham due to the one-week break as a result of UEFA Champions League participation but even with that, both teams are separated by a point as Tottenham has 4 points from 3 games and United has 3 points from 2 games.

Manchester United will face Brighton in the Carabao Cup at the Falmer Stadium, Tottenham already played Chelsea in an exciting match at the White Hart Lane Stadium which ended in penalties.

Jose Mourinho's men flourished on opportunities for penalties but will be playing the Europa League play-offs at home.

However, the issue of fatigue and fixture congestion will surely count later in the week.

Manchester United (EPL Build-up)

Ole Solskjaer had come under some criticism of late after United lost their opening game against Crystal at Old Trafford and narrowly won their last game against Brighton.

Red Devils' new signing, Donny Van de Beek got his debut goal in a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford but still has not started a match - coming on for Pogba in the two consecutive matches.

Van de Beek's agent has criticized Manchester United's treatment of the midfielder, and claims they should have been beaten 7-1 by Brighton last weekend.

Bruno Fernandes's impact on the United attack can not also be overemphasized as he continues to use his pass, vision, and spot-kick conversion to push the Red Devils ahead.

Compared with the other big 6, United still has not gotten their rhythm yet, but the match against Spurs could be the spark they need to kick-off their season.

Manchester United is known for its counter-attacking play with pacey Marcus Rashford and Daniel James or Greenwood or Martial at the flank would need to come to the fore on Sunday to overcome will-be tired Tottenham to clinch all 3 points.

Coach's statement

Ole Gunner hits out at Tottenham when he said "some teams progress in the Carabao Cup without playing" pointing to Tottenham's qualification without playing in the Carabao.

The Norwegian manager has hinted he will again utilize his squad in the Carabao Cup, ahead of Wednesday's fourth-round tie at Brighton & Hove Albion.

This squad shuffling would allow his first-team players to rest ahead of their match against Tottenham in the EPL on Sunday.

Manchester United Injury Update

United defender Phil Jones and center-back Axel Tuanzebe are the only players out of the squad with others very much available for selection.

Jones last featured for the Reds in the 6-0 Emirates FA Cup win over Tranmere in January.

Axel, 22, who captained the Reds in a Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale, last season in September, was set to return in June only for a further setback to occur, which required surgery.

However, if all continues to go well, the boss says Axel will be back in the picture after the October international break in a fortnight’s time.

Tottenham Hotspur (EPL Build-up)

Tottenham has been more active in the transfer window with several signing including, former Manchester City goalkeeper, Joe Hart, Hojberg from Southampton, Reguilon from Real Madrid, Gareth Bale, and Matt Doherty.

Jose Mourinho has enough squad depth to face his former side but will need more than big names to face United, he would need team chemistry, build-up play, cover, and aggression to face United.

The combination of Kane-Son would have been a solution but with Son out on injury, Lucas Moura will have to be deployed with Eric Lamela to assist Kane up-front while Steven Bergwijn could also be brought in later in the game.

Tottenham also faces fixture congestion playing 4 games in a space of 8 days, they have already played two - against Newcastle and Chelsea - with Maccabi Haifa and United remaining.

New signing, Reguilon started against Chelsea providing the assist for Lamela that drew the game for Spurs after Timo Werner's goal gave Chelsea the lead.

He won the man of the match award which would add to his confidence going forward in the season.

His ability and pace to trackback could be the answer to United counter-attacking play especially looking at the manner he ran back against Chelsea and stop Hodson Odoi (who also is a fast player) shutting off the counter-attack before it became dangerous.

Gareth Bale is yet to even appear on the squad list due to an injury. Son Heung-Min is also out on injury but the morale is high with the Chelsea win.

Coach's Statement

Jose Mourinho had nothing but praise for his players for the victory over Chelsea in the Carabao cup but he also lamented fixture congestion in his post-match press conference particularly with Eric Dier.

Mourinho said, “It’s a great feeling because this week is not human. Eric Dier, maybe one day he can explain his feelings about playing two 90 minutes in the space of three days, and special 90 minutes, because if you go to another league, the intensity is lower, but you know, Premier League football is incredible."

Jose Mourinho described our Carabao Cup success over Chelsea as a ‘victory of a team, of a group’.

"It’s a victory of a team, of a group,” declared Jose. “The ones who didn’t play Sunday, they gave everything. The ones who played Sunday, they were ready to help. The ones in the stands, they were here suffering."

He concluded saying, "My words to them were, after this performance, we have to win. The performance was so good, so dominant, I have to believe the big man upstairs was with us.

"And he was, and it was a fantastic victory for the boys, and it’s a competition we now have in the pocket until 21 December, so at least now we can focus on Europa League and Premier League.”
