Man Utd Won't Be Releasing Garnacho For U-20 World Cup

Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United have decided not to release Alejandro Garnacho for the Under-20 World Cup, despite the player being primed for his senior Argentina debut last month.

The club is looking to secure a top-four finish and potentially lift a second trophy when they play in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, which falls on June 3, the same day as the final of the Under-20 World Cup.

Garnacho, who recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2028, injured his ankle, which cost him his chance to make his senior Argentina debut.

The decision not to release Garnacho has caused controversy, with some critics suggesting that Manchester United is prioritizing club over country.

However, United manager Erik Ten Hag defended the decision, saying that the club needed the player for the FA Cup final and to secure a top-four finish.

"The club has decided not to release Garnacho for the Under-20 World Cup.

"He will return to team training partially, and then we have to see when he can return totally and then back in two games," Ten Hag told reporters.

Garnacho's rise this season has been impressive, with four goals and four assists in all competitions.

The young Argentine forward said that he was looking forward to creating more special memories with the team and their supporters.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes, who was seen in a protective boot earlier this week, overcame an ankle injury to play against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

Ten Hag praised the Portuguese midfielder for his determination and leadership, saying that he was an inspiration to the team.

"It was tough. A big compliment to Bruno. He absolutely didn't want to miss this game and did everything to get fit.

"He is the example that you have to suffer and sacrifice when you want to play at the top level, when you want to achieve something," Ten Hag said.
