Mariam Chabi Talata: First Female Vice President Of The Repu

The first female Vice President of the Republic of Benin, Mariam Talata was sworn into office on Sunday, May 23, 2021, with President Patrice Talon.

President Talon emerged winner of the April 11 presidential election for a second term in office.

Vice-president Mariam Chabi Talata is one of the founding members of the Progressive Union Party (PUP) and also the first 'Woman Vice President' of the National Assembly.

Patrice Talon's announcement of Mariam Chabi Talata Zimé Yerima as the candidate for the vice-presidency took everyone off guard including herself.

Now a former member of parliament, Mariam Talata becomes the first female Vice President of the Republic of Benin.

MariamMariam Chabi Talata Zime who hails from Bembéréké, Benin Republic was born on July 7, 1963. She obtained her first degree in Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Human Sciences of Abomey-Calavi. She became a Philosophy teacher in 1991 and worked in Natitingou, northern Benin.

Prior to her appointment as a member of parliament, she obtained a degree at the National Education Supervisory Staff Training School in 2009 and kick-started a career as an education inspector. 

In 2016, she was appointed director of secondary education at the Ministry of Education, a position she held till she went to sit in the assembly.

Mariam Chabi Talata has been known to have a strong voice on issues relating to women's education and rights. 

Although the position of Vice President is primarily nominal, it is however strategically important because a Vice President shall serve temporarily until the end of a resident's term of office in the event that the President dies or becomes incapacitated.

Mariam Chabi Talata Zime is married to an agricultural engineer and a mother to four children.

The Republic of Benin is a border country with Nigeria and home to over 7 million Nigerians. The country of over 12 million people, is an important trading partner of Nigeria, even though the bulk of commercial activities taking place is informal and largely undocumented due to the porous nature of the border.
