French Ligue 1 club Marseille on Tuesday sacked head coach Gennaro Gattuso and immediately replaced him with former coach of the Ivorian national team, Jean Louis Gasset.

Gattuso was appointed as manager in September 2023 and was in charge of the 1993 UEFA Champions League winners in 24 matches in all competitions.

"Olympique de Marseille would like to particularly thank Gennaro and all of his staff for the flawless investment and great professionalism they have shown on a daily basis and wish them good luck for the future," the French club said.

Gattuso's last match in charge of the club was the 1-0 defeat to surprise second-placed Brest.

Meanwhile, the new Marseille boss, Gasset, was in the dugout for the Ivorians when they lost 1-0 to Nigeria in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Cote d'Ivoire but was sacked afterwards despite the team qualifiying form the group as one of the four third best-place finishers.

In his comments after being confirmed as the new boss, Gasset said:

"It's a huge honour for me to be joining this legendary club, Olympique de Marseille. I can't wait to start working with this group to prepare for the upcoming fixtures and give the best of ourselves."

Marseille have not won seven games in all competitions and are currently in ninth place on the log.
