May 29: Kano Is Red

Red caps and white dresses; this is what greets you at every corner of Kano State today as Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf and Aminu AbdulSalam Gwarzo take over the leadership mantle.

Engineer Yusuf of the NNPP was elected after contesting for a second time to govern the state.

In the series of events leading to today, Abba Kabir Yusuf has through his Chief Press Secretary, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Kudu promised to ensure the basic needs of the people are met.

At today's swearing-in, youths including men and women wore the Kwankwasiyya uniform and sang across the streets.

Also at the event today with millions of supporters, many have been reported fainting. 

One Bashir Aminu Panshekara, a journalist at the scene told AllNews Nigeria that he bought water to help resuscitate many.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) supporters also reportedly booed the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, at the Sani Abacha Stadium, the venue of the inauguration ceremony for the new governor.

Immediately the first-class monarch arrived at the venue, the angry crowd started shouting at the top of their voices.

But security operatives quickly moved in and escorted the monarchs to their seats.

While the ceremony continues, the mild drama that unfolded with no doubt remain in the memories of those present for a long time to come.
