May Day: Enugu Workers Protest Against Government Over Non-Payment Of Minimum Wage

May Day: Enugu Workers Protest Against Government Over Non-P

Workers in various parastatals in Enugu State have expressed their anger over non-implementation of the new minimum wage by the state government.

The approved thirty thousand naira (N30,000) new minimum wage for Nigerian workers took effect in Enugu state since 2020, but it is only enjoyed by their counterparts in the ministries.

The parastatal workers who make up over 60 percent of the state workforce turned out en-mass for the 2022 May Day celebration clad in black outfit to show their dissatisfaction over the situation.

They also alleged that staff in state ministries were paid in full during the COVID-19 lockdown, while they in the parastatals were abandoned.

Tagged 'Black May Day' for workers in the parastatals in Enugu, the workers who wore gloomy faces, lamented the high cost of commodities in the market.

They pleaded with governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to as a matter of importance and urgency approve the payment of the new minimum wage for parastatals in order to give them succour.
