The World Cup most likely will be the 7-time Balon d'Or winner's last outing with Argentina.
Lionel Messi lifts Finalissima 2022
Messi has been able to win a Copa America, Finalissima as the skipper of the Argentina senior men team. He initially made a decision to retire after the 2014 world cup where they finished runner-up, defeated by Germany by Mario Gotze's lone goal in Brazil.
After much deliberation and consultation, the diminutive midfielder reversed his decision and went on to win two major trophies with the La Albiceleste.
He departed Barcelona where he played throughout his career in the 2021-22 season for French side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
Messi sad face
He did not hit the ground running in France as his debut season was plagued by COVID-19, injuries and post-hits. Messi only managed 11 goals and 14 assists across all competitions -- the worst in his entire career.
In Ligue 1, Messi only scored 6 goals with the remaining 5 goals coming from the Champions League and league cup. PSG only managed to win the Ligue 1 under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Despite his low returns on the field, Messi's signing made PSG a fortune in terms of sponsorships, and sales of jerseys a total of 700 million euros.
With that knowledge and knowing his presence will always be a threat to any opposition, PSG are willing to keep him at the Parc des Princes but he would not give a reply till after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
