Meta Introduces Facebook Dating Age Verification Test

Meta Introduces Facebook Dating Age Verification Test

Meta announced on Monday that  Facebook Dating will now use its age verification methods despite the service's lack of success as a key Tinder rival.

The new feature will act as the testing ground for additional experiments with new age verification technology, such as video selfies and ID uploads according to Facebook.

In order to start confirming the ages of Facebook Dating users when it suspects they have lied about their genuine age, the business said it will broaden its cooperation with online age verification service provider Yoti.

Meta has been investing in a variety of artificial intelligence-based age identification systems as governments put more pressure on online corporations to implement minimal precautions.

Although Meta hasn't completely described the signs it searches for to determine a person's age, it has previously stated that it may scan things like users' birthday postings because friends frequently respond with the poster's genuine age in their answers.

After encouraging users to start sharing their birthdays last year, Meta is already experimenting with this technology on Instagram.

This summer, if a user claims to be 18 or older, he or she will be asked for their ID or a video selfie.

The same evaluation will now be extended to Facebook Dating, a feature of Facebook's product where allowing participation by minors may provide even greater challenges.

The company wrote about the new tests on its blog, saying, "We're committed to making sure people have age-appropriate experiences across our technologies.

"As part of this work, we've been testing age verification tools and using age detection technology to prevent people under the age of 18 from accessing experiences meant for adults."

Similar to Instagram, Facebook's AI will prompt users to confirm their age if it thinks they may be under 18 and trying to use the Facebook dating app.

The user has the option to shoot a video selfie of their face, which they may subsequently submit with Yoti for age verification.

With the help of technology, Yoti can determine a user's age from their facial traits.

The picture is then removed. The user can also upload their ID to Facebook, where it will be encrypted and stored, if that is their preference, to verify their age.

Although the company's own help documentation states that it may store IDs for up to a year, users can control how long their ID is saved, the company notes.

According to Meta, the impact of its age verification capabilities on Instagram has already been felt.

Since its testing in June, it has discovered that around four times as many individuals have attempted to modify their date of birth to be older than 18 and successfully completed its age verification procedures.

This led to the placement of "hundreds of thousands" of users in the proper age groups.

It also asserts that 96% of teenagers who attempted to use these tools to change their birthdays to ones after 18 were unsuccessful.

It stated that 81% of respondents chose Yoti's video selfie to finish the process.

While age verification technology might help with the issue of children trying to use things meant for adults, it also creates additional issues.

Advocates for consumers' rights and privacy are cautioning that the techniques being employed, particularly those involving ID uploads, are intrusive and dangerous.

The French data protection body CNIL also issued a warning about how simple it is to get around many of today's measures.

The privacy issues are already clear, as seen with Facebook, as the corporation will keep user IDs on file for an endless amount of time after upload.

The business claims that its Facebook Dating test of age verification tools will launch in the United States but will later spread the features to other international markets.
