Police are holding at least five people who were detained by the military at Sarkin Pawa, Munya Local Government Area, Niger State, on suspicion of damaging railway tracks and sleepers.

The state's Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, made the revelation while presenting the suspects in Minna. He stated the military had caught them carrying a truckload of the vandalised items.

The CP said, “The suspects were intercepted and arrested by the military components at Sarkin Pawa with an RAF truck vehicle with registration number KTN 246 YZ along Katima Bridge, Sarkin Pawa, fully loaded with railway tracks and sleepers suspected to have been vandalised from the railway site.”

The suspects are Adekunle Saheed, 44, of Oyo State; Saifullahi Umar, 36, of Katsina State; Awal Mansir, 25 of Katsina State; Kabiru Lawal, 36 of Katsina State; and Aminu, 19 of Katsina State.

The CP added that during police interrogation, Adekunle Saheed admitted that his boss, Engr. Ali instructed him via phone conversation to hire a truck and transport railway infrastructure from Katama village, Kaduna, to Kwara state.

Danmamman stated that the police are committed to keeping the state safe from all sorts of criminal activity.

In a related report, the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology (NNSAT), Kachia Local Government Area, Kaduna State, says it has seized three trailers carrying vandalised railway lines and arrested 5 suspects in connection with the crime.

NNSAT Commandant Commodore Henry Aruomaren announced this during a news briefing in Kachia on Wednesday.

The suspects and seized railway tracks were turned over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for profiling and further investigation.

Aruomaren stated that the feat was part of the ongoing campaign against criminal activity in Kaduna State and its environs.

“The NNSAT Kachia internal security checkpoints at Makyali, Kachia LGA, acting on actionable intelligence at about 0500 on Feb. 2, intercepted the three trailers.

”The trailers with registration numbers ABJ 897 XB, MGU 232 ZF and XG 276 JJN, respectively, were laden with vandalised railway track materials concealed with animal feeds", he said.

According to the commandant, the vandalised railway tracks went from Katul-Crossing in Kachia LGA to Kafanchan.

He stated that because the railway tracks had not been used in a long time, criminal elements devised a technique to make money by vandalising and selling the metal irons.

“Reportedly, the suspects were arrested by the internal security checkpoint team during a stop and search operation.

“Consequently, the base was informed of the arrest and a Strike Force was dispatched to the scene of the arrest to move the suspects and the exhibits to the Base for further investigation.

“It suffices to state that, only one of the three trailer drivers was arrested while others absconded when they got the information that NNSAT internal security checkpoint had arrested the first trailer", he said.
