The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government to implement the N30,000 minimum wage.
This was disclosed by the state chairman of the NLC, Sani Haliru on Thursday in Gusau.
Haliru said the decision was taken by the union's State Executive Council in its meeting.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Haliru said: “We have exhausted all avenues of dialogue with the government, it is now left for us to go on strike to ensure that our right is given to us."
He further dismissed the social media reports that the state government was paying 70 percent of the minimum wage.
He added that the state governor, Bello Matawalle, had promised to begin payment of the N30,000 minimum wage in June but nothing has been achieved.
The head of service in the state had promised that payment would commence in August but it has not been fulfilled, he added.
“We cannot continue to fold our hands and allow the state government to mess up workers in the state."
He stressed that after the 21-day ultimatum, the union will embark on indefinite strike until their demand has been met.
