Minister Inaugurates Northeast Galaxy Backbone Office In Gom

The North East Regional Office of Galaxy Backbone was officially opened on Friday in Gombe by Prof. Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy.

Pantami stated the initiative would assist all six of the states in the region while speaking at the occasion.

According to Pantami, the centre would boost cybersecurity, create job opportunities, and improve the digital economy.

He said that establishing the centre in the area would aid in consolidating the benefits of the digital economy given the contributions that information and communication technologies (ICT) make to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Gombe Centre is a component of NICTIB Project's Phase 2 of the National Information and Communications Infrastructure Backbone.

Pantami revealed that the NICTIB 2 includes two states from the South and 18 states in the North that were not included in the NICTIB 1.

The minister said that the federal government's efforts to diversify the economy received support from the digital economy sector.

“For many years, most probably 50 years, Nigeria relied so much on oil and gas.

“But today, we have reached a situation where the contribution of ICT to our gross domestic products in Nigeria is almost three times the contribution of oil and gas to the country’s GDP.

“In the last three years, we have set up three unprecedented records with regards to ICT contributions to GDP,” Pantami said.

He explained that the IT sector contributed 17.97% to the GDP in the second quarter of 2021 compared to 14.07% in the first quarter of 2020.

“In the second quarter of 2022, the ICT sector contributed 18.44 per cent to our GDP, another unprecedented record.

"So we have set three new unprecedented records year-in-year out,” Pantami said.

Muhammad Abubakar, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Limited, had earlier stated that Galaxy remained dedicated to tying all 36 of Nigeria's states together with ICT infrastructure to support the country's digital economy.

“This Zonal and Marketing Office in Gombe also houses the Safe City infrastructure that will form a seed for Gombe to function as a Smart City,” he said.
