Monarch abducted by gunmen in Akwa Ibom

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, gunmen abducted HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang, the Paramount Ruler of Mbo Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom state, from his palace in Ebughu.

Though the abductors have yet to contact the victim's family for a possible ransom, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has verified the monarch's kidnapping.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Timfon John, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ayilara Waheed Adedamola, and other Service Commanders, including the Commissioner for Internal Security, have gone to Mbo local council to assess the situation.

She said, “I can confirm that CP and other Service Commanders & Commissioner for Internal Security were there and addressed press corp.”

The abduction comes just a few days after medical physicians suspended operations following the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr John Robbin Esu, who remains in the kidnappers' den three weeks later.

Only last week, the wife of Chief Asukwo Eweme Ulap Okon, alias Levile, a major political figure, was kidnapped in Oron.

Meanwhile, Elisha, a 25-year-old man, is said to have slain his lover in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.

The incident took place at the suspect's home near Beulah International Nursery and Primary Schools, Atiku Abubakar Way, Uyo, on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at around 7:00 am. At the time of filing this report, the motive for the murder remained unknown.

A mob of locals crowded the scene, obstructing the double lanes and preventing free passage of vehicles, when correspondents visited the location.

Allnews.ng gathered that armed officers were seen attempting to defuse the tension as the corpses of the victim and the alleged killer had already been transported to the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia.

According to a source who requested anonymity, the event occurred at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, when the suspect, who lives on the property, returned home with his lady friend, who claimed to be a nurse.

She added that the pair entered the room, and a few minutes later, the neighbours overheard the suspect assaulting his fiancée.

"An aged woman in the compound on hearing the shouts went and advised the boy to stop the beating but he refused. Since we couldn’t do anything, we called the father who lived away from the area to come and control the situation.

“The boy, on sighting the father in the compound, jammed the door against them and they raised the alarm to invite other people for rescue.

“Before others could arrive at the compound, the boy had already killed the girl and shredded her into pieces and went into hiding in the ceiling of the room, where the police came to bring him down for arrest,” she said.
