Mormon Massacre: Mexican Police Arrest Seven Suspects

Mormon Massacre: Mexican Police Arrest Seven Suspects

Following last month's report of the killing of nine Mormon women and children in Mexico, nine suspects have been arrested, this is according to the office of the Attorney General.

Among those rounded as suspects connected to the crime, a local police chief that was suspected to have a link to the incident was also detained.

The casualties in the tragedy were American and Mexican, killed on a backroad, between the Chihuahua and Sonora states, referred to as lawless areas that are infamous for fief battles between various drug cartels struggling over trafficking routes to the US.

Per the investigations into the crime, it is believed that the cartels that perpetrated the crime mistook the Mormon families for their rival gang, but this hypothesis has been repudiated by the family of the victims, saying that they strongly believe that they were targeted on purpose.

According to a statement from the office of the prosecutor, the suspects were taken into custody on the 26th of December for what is termed "probable responsibility" in the crime. What remains unclear are the charges against the four others arrested.

The US President, Donald Trump, said after the homicides, that the United States would list drug cartels as terror groups, making Mexicans believe that this was another avenue for the US to meddle in the affairs of their country.

Mexican President, Lopez Obrador, visited with the victims' families to report give a report on the ongoing investigation.
