Mr Macaroni Calls For Release Of Detained #EndSARS Protester

Nigerian actor and comedian, Adebowale Adedayo, widely recognised as Mr Macaroni, has urged the Nigerian police to release all protesters unjustly imprisoned since the 2020 #ENDSARS demonstrations.

The activist took to the streets on Friday, October 20, 2023, to lead a peaceful protest marking the third anniversary of the tragic Lekki massacre that transpired in 2020 during the #ENDSARS protests.

During this commemorative walk, he called for the release of the detained protesters.

“We are here to honour the lives of those lost on October 20, 2020. I want to use this opportunity to call for the unconditional release of all those who are still unjustly imprisoned.

“There are still some protesters who have been in prison since 2020; lawyers have been on their cases every day, but they're still there. We are using this opportunity to call those concerned once again for the unconditional release of the protesters,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr Macaroni underlined that many Nigerians, including himself, continue to protest due to their deep love for the country and the desire to witness significant improvements within their lifetimes.

“Some of us are still here because we love this country so much and we don't want this country to burn. We want things to be better in our generation.

“That is why we always do this so that people never forget. We all deserve better,” he said.

Amnesty International revealed that 15 #EndSARS protesters, who were arrested in 2020, remain in arbitrary detention without trial even three years after the historic #EndSARS protests shook Nigeria.

The organisation disclosed that most of these detained protesters are being held at Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre and Ikoyi Medium Security Correctional Centre in Lagos, and they have yet to face trial.
