Nadal loses to Zverev, out of French Open

Rafael Nadal has been eliminated from the French Open after a first-round 6-3 7-6 (5) 6-3 defeat against Alexander Zverev in front of an adoring and emotional Philippe Chatrier crowd on Monday evening.

The 14-time champion, now at the twilight of his career, rolled back the years for most parts of the game as he clinched a break at the start of the third quarter but ultimately his fitness concerns showed up against the in-form world number 4.

The unseeded ‘King of Clay’ who was out for a long spell due to injury, was backed on by family, friends and rivals at the scene of his greatest triumphs with Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and women’s number one and three-time champion, Igo Swiatek. Manchester City midfielder, Rodri, who won the Premier League with his club was also in the stands to support his compatriot.

More crucially was the presence of Nadal's wife, Xisca, who rarely watches his matches, baby son Rafael Jr and uncles Toni – his former coach – and Miguel Angel, the ex-Spain footballer.

After the loss to his rival on Monday who is 10 years younger than him, Nadal’s astonishing Roland Garros record now reads played 116, won 112, as Zverev added his name to Djokovic and Robin Soderling as the only players to beat him.
