NEMA confirms six dead, 21 rescued in Onitsha building colla

The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) has provided an update on the tragic building collapse at Ochanja Market in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to NEMA's preliminary report released on its verified platform, the collapse occurred around 6:30 pm on Monday.

The report confirmed the loss of six lives in the incident, with 21 individuals rescued alive. The deceased have been taken to the morgue, while the injured victims have been transported to various hospitals in Onitsha for treatment.

The collapsed building, described as a new Plaza under construction with over 120 shops, has left a significant number of people with injuries of varying severity.

NEMA stated that search and rescue efforts are ongoing at the scene, with the Anambra State government deploying earthmoving equipment to expedite the operation.

The agency's Owerri Operation office has been mobilized to Onitsha to assist the South East Zonal Office in the rescue mission.

Various stakeholders, including the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross Society Onitsha Chapter, Ministry of Works, and several construction companies, are actively involved in the rescue efforts.

The state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, visited the scene to assess the situation and contributed to the mobilization of tractors and excavators for the rescue operation.

NEMA's coordinated response underscores the collaborative efforts of government agencies and other relevant stakeholders in managing the aftermath of the tragic incident and providing support to the affected individuals and families.
