The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on Monday, initiated the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted commodities in Zamfara State to alleviate hardship among vulnerable people.

According to the Director General, Zubaida Umar, represented by the Northwest Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Ishaya Isa Chinoko, the commodities include maize, millet, sorghum, and garri.

While launching the distribution in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, Dr. Chinoko explained, “President Ahmed Bola Tinubu approved the release of 42,000MT of assorted food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve.

“This initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda to alleviate the current economic hardship in the country.

“After sharing the commodities and successfully transporting the quantities allocated to Zamfara State, today we are here to hand over the food items to the State Government for distribution to the identified deserving beneficiaries in the communities through the constituted Committees in each LGA,” he added.

He detailed the committee composition, stating, “The committee in each LGA includes the Chairman of the LGA, State Emergency Management Agency, a Traditional Ruler, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Faith-Based Organizations, JNI and CAN, Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, Nigerian Red Cross Society, women associations, persons with disability groups, youth associations, principals of boarding schools, civil society organizations, and the media.”

Receiving the commodities, Governor Dauda Lawal commended the Federal Government under President Tinubu's leadership for the provision aimed at alleviating the hardship caused by the current economic downturn.

“The commodities will be judiciously shared only to identified vulnerable people without political or religious discrimination across the 14 local government areas of the state.

“The State Government will not hesitate to take action against anyone found engaging in wrongdoing before, during, or after the distribution exercise” he added.
