Netflix Adapting Lupita Nyong'o's Book Sulwe As Animated Mus

Streaming giant Netflix will adapt Lupita Nyong'o's children's book Sulwe into an animated musical feature film.

The news was announced on Thursday by the streaming platform, and it was confirmed by the award-winning actress via her Twitter account, Deadline reported.

Sulwe is written by Lupita Nyong'o and the plot revolves around the titular character, a little girl with skin darker than that of anyone she knows.

According to the book, Sulwe was born "the colour of midnight". All she has ever longed for is to be beautiful and bright. Her life is changed forever one night when she is visited by a shooting star sent by the Night. Sulwe goes on a magical journey and learns about the tale of the sisters Day and Night.

The book tackles the issues of colourism, self-esteem, and the realization that true beauty comes from within. It was illustrated by Vashti Harrison and published in October 2019.
