Newcastle Hold Milan To Draw In Champions League Return

Newcastle held AC Milan to a goalless draw on their return to the Champions League after a 20-year absence.

Eddie Howe's side secured a return to the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, and were rewarded with a place in Group F, alongside French champions Paris St-Germain and German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The encounter proved to be an eye opener for Newcastle of how difficult the competition is, with Tommaso Pobega, Rade Krunic and Theo Hernandez forcing Nick Pope into saves in a one-sided first half.

But the Magpies showed intent in the second half as former Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali saw a shot blocked.

Rafael Leao came the closest to breaking the deadlock for Milan in the closing stages when he got between Newcastle defenders to meet a cross, but his header settled on the roof of the net.

Newcastle eventually had their first shot on target in stoppage time when Sean Longstaff saw a fierce effort tipped over.

In the end, both teams shared the spoils at the San Siro, with the Magpies taking home plenty of positives from their first group stage match.
