NGO Accuses Lagos Government of Neglecting Education In Mako

Life Changers Foundation, a United Kingdom-based, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has accused the Lagos State government of not supporting education in the Makoko area of Yaba in the state.

This was made known by the founder of the foundation, Sheri Adegbesan, during the donation of materials that the students will use for two years.

According to Adegbesan, there was no proof to show the validity of the sponsorship offered to students in the area, adding that there is no continuity of the assistance rendered to the learners which allows the problems to persist.

She however acknowledged the effort of the Lagos State government for sponsoring some students, while encouraging it to do more

‘‘I know the government has adopted some children but, I think they can do more. Although the government offered them sponsorship, there is no documentation to show how long it will run. They bought uniforms for them and shoes.

"These children will grow up, who would buy the next school shoes and uniforms? I think when the government wants to do something like this, they should have it documented for continuity.

"A lot of people come to Makoko to do things but there is no continuity, and the problems still remain," she expressed.

Adegbesan further said the learners who lived on water were afraid to go to school on land, while those who school on land spent the sum of N400 in doing so.

She called on the government to provide the learners with a bus as a form of encouragement.

“I know the government cannot do everything but they can give them a bus that will take them from the water to the land school, this will encourage them. So, I don’t think the government is encouraging them enough.’’

The Foundation's Children's home sponsored the end-of-term party of Mipamawu Children School and Mawumadoka orphans & less privileged home/school, Oko-Agbon in Makoko, Punch reports.
