NGO Educate 50 Journalists On Climate Change Reporting In Ba

A Bauchi-based initiative, the Global Environmental and Climate Conservation Initiative (GECCI), have commenced the training of 50 journalists on climate change reporting in the state.

The Chief Executive Officer of the group, Abdulhamid Tahir made this known at the inauguration of the training on Monday.

Tahir said the African Climate Reporters and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State council partnered with the GECCI to organise the training which aims to expose the journalists to the dynamics of climate change to promote their activities.

The CEO disclosed that a number of international organisations made available funds to enhance environmental journalism, encouraging the participants to make good use of the available funds to help their careers. 

Reacting to the gesture, the Permanent Secretary of Bauchi State Ministry of Information and Communication, Shehu Jalam, commended the move, stating that it would enhance the capacity of journalists in the state.

Jalam added that the training would also help in creating awareness about the reduction of the effects of climate change in society.

He noted Bauchi state government would also partner with organisations to educate journalists ahead of the forthcoming general election in 2023.

Director-General, Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), Dr Kabir Ibrahim added that “If journalists are consistent in reporting the ecosystem, the issues of climate change will be reduced by 45 per cent in the next 30 years,”
